Personal Message from John to His Generous Family and Friends:
The funding for our target populations is seriously deficient, so please know that your support really matters and will make a significant contribution to the 13,000 individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and developmental disabilities (DD) we now serve and the expanded services you make possible. To emphasize that point, let me summarize why our purpose statement is “to inspire health, hope and happiness…” and why nine families in 1957 dedicated their lives to passionately advocate for the needs a very large and marginalized population with complex health conditions.
Health: The people we serve are some of society’s most vulnerable citizens. In addition to a diagnosis of SMI and/or DD, most have multiple chronic health conditions, die years or decades earlier than the general population due to poor care and without help, never achieve a quality of life that we often take for granted. To address this societal issue, we provide integrated physical and mental healthcare to treat the whole person.
Hope: Without treatment for their medical conditions, individuals with SMI tragically experience years or decades of depression and psychosis resulting in the loss of family, friends and jobs that lead to homelessness, frequent cycles of hospitalizations, trauma and ultimately the complete loss of hope and no reason to live. It is our privilege to relentlessly advocate, to never give up on people even if they have given up, to help our members stabilize their lives through evidence-based interventions and ultimately inspire hope, the fuel that makes recovery and happiness possible.
Happiness: Inspiring hope, stabilizing lives and helping individual manage their symptoms is not enough. Happiness does not exist without safety, access to food, employment, relationships, purpose and the achievement of life goals. We provide housing, employment, (re)connection to families/friends and navigation services to access community resources. We also see the value, worth, abilities and possibilities in every person and help members define their unique interests, passions and life goals and then support them in the pursuit of their happiness.
It is my privilege to work for company that helps so many people in need, but there is so much more work to do and so I am so very grateful for your support.
